Founded
in 1961, PELA is a privately owned corporation with national and
international clientele. Since its incorporation, PELA has emerged
as a leader in hydrology, geology, and environmental studies. For
more than four decades, the firm has been involved in hydrologic,
geologic, engineering, and environmental projects; water-resources
development; and hazardous and sanitary waste management in the
U.S. and abroad.
During
its long history of providing high-quality service to its clients,
PELA has developed an internationally recognized reputation for
excellence in karst studies. Dr. Philip LaMoreaux, founder
of PELA, is one of the early karst authorities of the modern era.
PELA continues to advance the science of karst studies through its
sponsorship and organization of the highly successful series of
Multidisciplinary Conferences on Sinkholes and the Engineering and
Environmental Impacts of Karst. The conference series Proceedings
volumes edited by Dr. Barry Beck, former director of Florida
Sinkhole Research Institute and current Vice-president for Karst
of PELA and Chief-of-Operations of PELA's office in Oak Ridge, Tennessee,
have become standard references on environmental geology and engineering
geology in karst settings. Dr. Beck has been recognized as "the
foremost authority on sinkholes in the world."
PELA
has provided consulting services to a variety of public-sector clients,
including the US Environmental Protection Agency; the US Army Corps
of Engineers; the US Air Force; the US Department of Justice; the
US Department of Transportation; regional water management districts;
state and local governments; and numerous private-sector clients,
including aggregate industries; cement companies; homeowner associations;
insurance companies; and individual home owners. PELA is conveniently
located with respect to many karst areas of the US, with its home
office in Tuscaloosa, Alabama; and branch offices in Oak Ridge,
Tennessee; Mobile, Alabama; and Jackson, Mississippi.
PELA
operates a full-service analytical laboratory in Lakeland, Florida.
PELA is a small business as defined by the US Small Business Administration.
PELA meets the technical, health-and-safety, and insurance standards
required by its clients. PELA geologists are registered in sixteen
